Some of you may already be familiar with the bible of typography - the Yearbook of Type. Now, however, slanted publishers has not only honored us with the annual typography compendium, but has also published another book that opens the doors to the typographic world even wider: The Yearbook of Lettering. This focuses on handmade typography, from calligraphy and graffiti to digital 3D lettering.
320 pages of handwritten inspiration - that's the first impression of this year's Yearbook of Lettering, published for the first time by slanted Publishers. And at second glance, the book remains promising:
The book comes in a high-quality cover with foil embossing and is visually realized with graphic attention to detail. A lavish blurb recalls the love of typography and emphasizes: "The world of lettering, calligraphy, graffiti, and 3D-lettering unveils itself as challenging and sublime." This motto runs through every page, giving the main protagonist - the hand-painted, folded, blown-up, digital or analog letters - the space they need to unfold their effect and leave an impression.
Four chapters present artists and brands from all over the world. You can get to know some of them through short interviews, while others simply showcase their work on a large scale. In the chapter "Findings - our picks from Instagram", the publication also offers a platform for lesser-known designers - in square tiles and sorted by color. Finally, there is an index that summarizes all the protagonists in alphabetical order. The result is a multifaceted presentation of the world of lettering that not only serves the purpose of being a source of inspiration for readers. In addition, the Yearbook of Lettering creates visibility for talented artists and thus becomes a tribute to the typographic scene.
