In the extensive exhibition "Zeitläufe", the Institute for New Technical Form in Darmstadt is presenting works by graphic designer Christof Gassner until the end of August, focusing on his posters and stamp designs in relation to one another.
Typographer and graphic designer Christof Gassner is one of the quieter people in the country. But his posters, books, brochures and other publications speak for themselves. Born in Zurich, he is always able to combine the cultivated typographic line of his homeland with elegance and subtle wit. His work remains in the memory, just think of the classically austere, strictly black and white Canton advertising, his committed design of the first Öko-Test booklets, of which he was a co-founder, the magnificent poster edition "darmstadt-texte-typen" or his probably most personal book "OdenBergWaldStraße". Not forgetting his work as a professor in Darmstadt and Kassel.
Since the memorable "Letraset" exhibition in 1977, a regular collaboration has also developed with the Darmstadt Institute for New Technical Form (INTeF). To mark his 80th birthday, the INTeF is now organizing an exhibition entitled "Zeitläufte", which uses his posters and stamp designs to demonstrate the breadth of his range of tasks and his stylistic diversity. The juxtaposition of small and large formats is particularly appealing, because here and there the meticulous attention to detail is evident - and a preference for text solutions that entice the viewer to take a closer look. And there is something else that stands out in these "crossroads through six decades of graphic design" (Gassner): an astonishing freshness and topicality.
