In 2015, the Zurich-based bag manufacturer Freitag invited creative people from all over the world to design a truck tarpaulin. From over a thousand submissions, two designs were finally selected and sent out on the road for five years, printed on tarpaulins. They are now being used to sew bags - you can now apply to receive one of the limited Design a Truck Editions and, with a bit of luck, be one of the lucky ones.
In 2015, the design "I Love Truck Machine" by Hélène Crochemore was chosen as the winner from over a thousand entries, but because the partners at Planzer haulage company were so enthusiastic about the great motifs, they had another truck tarpaulin printed for a smaller truck with the design "F-Ninja" by Shibutani Suguru from Japan. After more than five years "on the road", the tarpaulins are now literally being taken out of circulation and Freitag is turning them into exclusive bags. Exactly 126 bags from the F715 MIAMI VICE | DESIGN A TRUCK Edition (89 from "I love Truck Machine" and 37 from the "F-Ninja" tarpaulin) have been cut from the washed tarpaulins and sewn together over the last few weeks.
Rare Freitag bags have always been in great demand and as there are only 126 of the Design-a-Truck edition, the company from Oerlikon in Zurich has decided to give all interested parties the same chance. Anyone wishing to purchase one of the bags can register at freitag.ch/designatruckedition, and the winner will be decided democratically by lot. Registration is open until October 19, and the winners will be notified after the draw on October 20.
But the F715 MIAMI VICE | DESIGN A TRUCK Edition is not only limited, it is also a Surprise Edition, which means that anyone who chooses a bag will find out what it really looks like for the first time when they unpack it at home. But with the great templates, that shouldn't be a problem and the people who cut the tarpaulins at Freitag naturally also have an excellent eye for attractive cut-outs.
Participation is definitely worthwhile and is still possible until October 19. You are also not obliged to take the bag off, as there should be plenty of interested parties.
