Whether it's children's books or political topics, cookbooks or black and white impressions - the world of illustration is wonderfully diverse. In Grafikmagazin 01.22, which focuses on illustration, you can expect a wealth of inspiration and lots of information about what drives illustrators, what is still lacking in the industry and what tips they can give. The cover also gives a lot of space to illustration and is already spreading anticipation for the summer. You can discover all this and much more in our new issue.
From the content
The focus of this issue is illustration, but as always, the Grafikmagazin with a wide variety of topics. In our photography section, we introduce Barbara Niggl-Radloff, who became the publisher's photographer for Münchner Illustrierte in the late 1950s - the first and only woman to do so. She captured her time with a wonderful eye and portrayed celebrities such as Erich Kästner and Truman Capote. To mark the end of the nuclear power plant, students have dedicated various projects to Brokdorf and captured the place, its significance and, above all, the people in their photos.
In our "Design & Research" section, we explore how capitalism and graphic design are connected, as well as how more creativity can succeed outside the digital world. This time, "Leaf Blower" is all about mistakes - are they "happy little accidents", as the painter Bob Ross said, or are they rather medium-sized disasters? Designers talk about what has happened to them and what they have learned from it. Finally, we take a trip to the lithography studio and the Norwegian Printing Museum in Stavanger and in our "Packaging" focus, we explore the question of what attractive and sustainable packaging design looks like.
Graphics+ Illustration
"On paper, you can quickly see whether an idea works or not," says illustrator Malika Specht, who turned her back on her degree in mechanical engineering and now works full-time as an illustrator and tattoo artist. We have collected many of these clearly outstanding ideas from different designers on 20 pages in Grafik+. Nina Dulleck, whose repertoire of children's book illustrations is enormous and who has a lot of praise, but also clear criticism for her industry. Caroline Frett, whose humorous drawings give expression to very special feelings, often self-deprecating and with impressive powers of observation. Yeye Weller with her infectious cheerfulness, which has also attracted clients such as Adidas, Netflix and the New York Times. Or Anni von Bergen, whose cookbook "A Sauerkraut's Kitchen" and the rest of her portfolio whet the appetite and whet the appetite for travel adventures. In an interview, she aptly described her work as a "process whose content is fed by things that I want to understand and cultivate".
Cover & Production
Illustrator Anne Albert has put us in a good mood with our cover motif: Blue skies, shorts, time to dream - who couldn't wish for that? "I really wanted to capture that summer vacation feeling that you long for the most," she told us.
For the cover, we used the FSC-certified natural board Peyvida in the puro surface, whose attractive texture gives print products a sophisticated look, but also a fresh naturalness. The reduced motif accentuates the paper structure particularly well. The Salzer Touch white, wood-free smooth paper from Igepa, which is Cradle to Cradle-certified, is subtly accentuated on the inside.
The showroom
In the showroom, we present Félix Béltran, whose curriculum vitae reads like a movie: Pupil of Bob Gill, collaboration with design greats such as Milton Glaser and Herbert Matter, then in the service of the Cuban revolution. A true life of adventure! They are joined by the designer Luzia Hein and the graphic designer Paul Leichtfried, who each defined their own practice of finding ideas and appreciating their creative work. Finally, with the design studio Super Terrain, we present a team that makes printing dreams come true, likes to experiment a lot and is not afraid to share a few of their mistakes with us.
