With our issue 03.21, we have really dressed up for you and unpacked the little black dress, so to speak. Not only an unusual cover illustration and colored paper attract attention, but also an all-round color cut in deep black.
Bright colors, shimmering gold or motifs that match the cover perfectly - cut finishes offer a wide range of possibilities today. For the cover of the graphic arts magazine 03.21, we opted for a deep black color cut that corresponds with the cover motif printed in 1c. Only the paper (Pergraphica) lends color to this issue, everything else is black. This makes the magazine look like a solid block - more of a design object than a magazine.
The cut finishing was produced by the Mayer bookbindery in Esslingen and a UV machine color cut was used. "With UV color cutting," explains Managing Director Frieder Mayer, "the cut is smoothed in the machine and UV ink is applied in the pressed state using a roller system, then the UV ink is cured directly in the machine. As a result, we have virtually no ink runs and the first color cut is 100 percent identical to the last copy of the print run."
An expressive illustration, beautiful paper and the right color cut - it often doesn't take much to transform a print product into an artistic object.
However, as with every print job, the same applies here: Advice is important. Discuss the choice of paper with your printer and finisher or, as in this case, with the bookbinder. Discussing the project itself in advance can also be worthwhile, as printing and finishing experts know their trade and often come up with ideas and solutions that you as a creative person would not have thought of.
We would like to thank our partners who supported us with this production. And especially to the Mayer bookbindery, which provided us with the pictures from the production.
