Why did we start a print magazine at this time of all times? Because we are convinced that print is a form of communication that touches all our senses like no other. The focus on "Creative Paper" is therefore an affair of the heart for us and a particular pleasure. In Grafikmagazin 03.22, print literally pulls out all the stops.
Better together
This issue is all about collaboration. Not only is the spectacular cover the result of extensive cooperation between various partners, this time our focus is also on the topic of collaboration. The last two and a half years have demonstrated just how much the creative industry relies on productive collaboration. We in the Grafikmagazin team are also constantly reminded of the fact that much better ideas are created in a group than alone at a desk. In our "Focus on Collaboration", we introduce you to the scientific journal Science Notes, which worked together with the design studio Joseph & Sebastian. You can also read in an interview with Rosa Kammermeier and Felix Pöttinger how their joint graphic vase series came about. Our "Design & Research" section in this issue is all about justice - in the school system, in business and in private households.
In the "Photography" section, we take a look back at Germany around 1980 - a strange time from today's perspective, when fears of forest dieback and nuclear power were rife, but there was also a tremendous spirit of optimism and punks stormed the streets, while elsewhere Helmut Kohl was elected chancellor. Richard Mosse also provides a very special view, using films and cameras that often originate from military reconnaissance. He uses them to take an aesthetic and forensic look at the major problems of our time.
Graphics+ Creative Paper
Packaging made from elephant grass, books that combine the look of a science fiction adventure with the finest haptics and printing technology or Italian entrepreneurs who are the fourth generation to create fine papers - the topic of creative paper is as diverse as it is fascinating. On twenty pages in this issue, you can experience paper, beautiful printing and unusual binding techniques. Paper can invite you to dream, literally knock your socks off, perhaps even determine the architecture of tomorrow - in any case, there are virtually no limits to creativity with paper.
Cover & Production
This issue has presented us with major challenges in terms of photography. As beautiful as the pictures of the graphic magazine 03.22 have turned out, they are nothing compared to the experience of holding the real magazine in your hands.
Two different embossed foils shimmer on the cover and contrast beautifully with the dark uncoated paper. The motif, which was created for the Grafikmagazin by type designer and art director Dennis Moya Razafimandimby from Lausanne, plays with terms from the paper industry and the overlapping of the two embossing foils creates greater depth. The foils Luxor 429 N and the transparent Lumafin Pink were supplied by Kurz, the embossing tool was manufactured by Hinderer + Mühlich and Gräfe Druckveredelung provided its expertise for the hot stamping.
If the focus of this issue is paper, then we naturally want to show as much of it as possible. We start with the beautiful natural board Malmero deep blue in 300 gsm, while the GardaPat 13 Kiara, Kamiko Fly and Iona Art grades await you in the inner section. The volume papers are not only a tactile experience, they also turn this issue into a really thick thing. All the papers in this issue are from Inapa.
The showroom
In the showroom, we present the 100 best posters - not all of them, but at least a best of - and are delighted with the great results. We also introduce Studio Bräutigam & Rotermund, who design brandings with great color effects. The Polish designer Anna Lenczewska creates unusual screen prints that combine Dutch minimalism with Polish poster art, and the communication designer Santiago Pol had a decisive influence on the design scene in Venezuela from the 1950s onwards, focusing on the power of color, a characteristic that still sets the style for design from Latin America today.
