Why make just one cool cover when you can have six! The new issue of the graphics magazine comes with six completely different cover motifs designed by studios from Germany and the USA. The special feature: The motifs were realized using risograph printing and are true art prints. This is how "creative printing" works.
The content of the new issue of Grafikmagazin is at least as colorful as the cover. This time, the "Focus" section focuses on ethics in design. Business information scientist Sarah Spiekermann deals with digital ethics and has developed a value system for the 21st century, which we take a closer look at. We spoke to Robin Auer, board member of the DDC and designer at IBM, about the responsibility that companies and designers have when dealing with AI. You can find this and more in our "Focus: Ethics".
In our "Production & Publishing" section, our author Sylvia Lerch visited the lithography workshop in Munich's Künstlerhaus and looked over the shoulder of workshop manager Raquel Ro as she worked on photolithography. The Portuguese studio This is Pacifica has turned a book into a brick or vice versa and the VDMB's annual magazine is a masterpiece in terms of printing, design and finishing.
The book "Keimzelle", in which students document an experimental garden project in a public space, also shows how form and content can be mutually beneficial. Quite rightly one of the winners of this year's "Most Beautiful German Books" competition. We also present the Healthy Materials Lab, whose founders Alison Mears and Jonsara Ruth explain in an interview why material health is a topic that designers should definitely address.
Graphics+ "Creative Printing"
It's no secret that we love print at Grafikmagazin , but in this issue we have been amazed again and again at how spectacularly and innovatively print can be used. Be it by designing invitations that really make an impression, sample books that make products shine in a grandiose way or by rediscovering and reinterpreting old printing techniques. At ESAD in Portugal, for example, students learn how to use letterpress printing for their own projects and learn a lot about design principles, white space and typography. You can find this and more in our Grafik+ section with a focus on "Creative Printing".
The cover
Risography printing is very versatile, from flyers to postcards or art prints, many things can be realized with this environmentally friendly process. However, using risography on a large scale for magazine covers is unusual. Six designers and riso studios in Germany and the USA have developed and printed motifs for Grafikmagazin . Each motif is completely different, each has its own creative and technical refinements.
The wrap-around cover, in which the front and back correspond to each other, was first pre-printed in offset and then printed by the studios using the risography process. The paper used was Munken Pure Rough in 300 gsm from Inapa.
The cover motifs are by Herr &Frau Rio,Kelli Anderson,Martin Krusche, Rosidruckt,Superkolor andThe Happy Club.
The showroom
This time, the showroom travels to Amman, Jordan, where Studio Turbo works at the highest level between art and communication, running a design studio, a gallery, a printing workshop and a radio station. We present the deserving winners of the ADC Talent Award and the 100 Best poster competition, as well as the impressive work of artist and illustrator Fidel Sclavo.
