For the second time in a row, the annual magazine of the Bavarian Print and Media Association has been named best annual report. This is not a matter of course, but who, if not a printing association, should show how great communication can be achieved with print?
In its annual magazine, the VDMB explores topics that are relevant to the printing industry, and in 2022 there were four: decarbonization, deglobalization, demographics and digitalization. These focal points were not only discussed in the magazine with a great deal of expertise, they also shaped the design of the magazine. Not only is it divided thematically into four parts, the division is also made clear on the cover, which plays with different papers in a clever way and shows that this is also about the big picture.
The play with different materials and finishes is a good look for a print association and the editorial design of the inside pages also demonstrates great attention to detail and expertise. Designer Marina Kuhn was able to make full use of her many years of experience as a magazine maker. "For us, these four Ds are parts of a whole, and together they represent the most important challenges that we cannot ignore - on the contrary: we have to deal with them, work with them, design them - just as they shape and design our annual magazine," explains Marian Rappl, Head of Communications at the VDMB.

The mediaV Award jury was also convinced: "The four key topics chosen not only concern the industry, but also deal with relevant trends in business and society. With this broader classification of the association's interests, it is also possible to score points in terms of journalistic quality. With regard to the graphic design, you can see on every double page that the creators have taken enough time to combine form and content. Everything is clear, coherent and convincing. All in all, a high-end print product that is appropriate for an industry that is all about print products," says Margit Dorn, co-owner of the WIP Wissenschaftliches Institut für Presseforschung und Publikumsanalysen.
Association communication still often seems a little outdated, but at the Verband Druck und Medien Bayern, the motto is: practice what you preach. At the award ceremony in Cologne, the VDMB team was therefore very deservedly delighted to receive the mediaV Award.
