Lederhosen and wheat beer, FC Bayern Munich and BMW, Leberkässemmel and Breznknödel - there is certainly a lot that the Free State of Bavaria is known for. But the team from Slanted Publishers wanted to prove together with bayern design that Bavaria is so much more than all the culinary clichés and the obligatory Oktoberfest visit - namely creative, innovative and passionate.
Cosmopolitan city with heart & mind
According to Nadine Vicentini, Managing Director of bayern design, Bavaria stands out in particular for its flourishing design landscape. Whether product, industrial or fashion design, jewelry, graphics or digital art, but also photography and communication - the location proves that companies benefit greatly from local creativity.
For a long time, the Free State was still regarded as a mere agricultural country, but the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich presented the world with a civilian-oriented Federal Republic that had shed the dull greyness of the post-war years and was looking openly to the future. Since then, people have spoken of the "cosmopolitan city with a heart", and Otl Aicher's pioneering corporate identity is considered legendary today. Even back then, it proved that design communicates and connects; today, "design connects" is the credo of bayern design in its work as an association that represents both economic and design interests.
Passion for their region
The collaboration between bayern design and Slanted Publishers was therefore aimed at tracking down accomplished designers, artists, photographers, illustrators and craftspeople who are passionate about their craft and identify - in one way or another - with the region.
The special edition Slanted Bavaria thus follows the tradition of the multi-award-winning indie publishing house, which focuses on a specific typographic or country-specific theme in each issue and provides it with an appropriately designed layout. Keyword cover: a modified form of the Bavarian coat of arms is used here - the upside-down lion.
And yes, especially in more conservative places, it can help to embrace the elegance and wit of creativity in order to turn certain traditions and established views inside out. The Slanted Special Issue Bavaria portrays exciting people, collectives and creative companies that demonstrate how much diversity and intelligence there is in their home country.
"It was clear to us that Bavaria is rich," concludes the publishers of Slanted Publishers. "Rich in creativity, diversity and intelligence. But the research has given us so many finds that this edition could have been many times more comprehensive. We have to live with this dilemma. Typically Bavarian: always a little too much of a good thing! And we think that's really good. Servus!"
By the way, the team from Grafikmagazin is also taking part. As curators, we were able to introduce some of our Bavarian friends and favorite places. So if you've always wanted to know whose food blogs we trust, which exhibitions we love and which fashion designers we think are promising, hurry up!
