The sheer endless possibilities of making connections and networking can be overwhelming, but the editorial team of Witten Lab magazine particularly enjoys it. In its second issue, it focuses on the potential of creative ideas that can change the world.
Network yourselves!
"This is a guide for you to read and use this magazine - even if that is ultimately up to each person," the editors write at the beginning of the editorial. "And although we deliberately want to disrupt your viewing habits, a little reading guidance might be nice." In fact, the note helps you to navigate through the various symbols when leafing through the pages: between further references, web links and additional information, your attention is also drawn to international articles. The aim of all this is to enable even more networking. This is also the purpose of the booklet; it aims to make connections where there are none and uncover those that were still hidden.
The diversity of different perspectives
In other words, the team, which is made up of members of the Zukunftslabor Studium at the Private University of Witten/Herdecke and is supported by thekitchen design studio in its implementation, wants to offer "a variety of perspectives, knowledge and opportunities for action". In addition to the magazine as a printed product, the aim is to create a network of as many different people as possible. A glance at the table of contents makes it clear that they also bring completely different ideas and topics to the table: "1000 faces of peace. When women change the world", "Insights into the brave new world of artificially intelligent and virtual UX systems", "Vitamin B: How much of it is healthy?" and "Collective trauma - bonding across generations" are just a few of the titles of the articles printed.
Creativity can change the world
The consensus is that there is an urgent need for more opportunities to combine different ways of thinking and experiences, even if they contradict or irritate each other. "So that what we need most urgently if we want to change the world can emerge: Creativity," art director Lisa Jasch writes to me, referring to the design of the magazine, which she was responsible for. "This is graphically expressed in the cover design, which is characterized by colour blocking and multiple arrangement and recombination options. The editorial can be read on every page in the footer, creating a cross-link throughout the entire magazine. Typographic connections are created through ligatures and word recombinations of different fonts."
The magazine, which was produced in an edition of 5,000 copies in a completely environmentally friendly way with vegan inks and in accordance with the highest environmental standards, also impresses with particularly attractive paper changes. The cover in particular is striking both visually and haptically: "The paper structure on the cover is reminiscent of a finely woven net," says Lisa Jasch. "The magazine also features text-in-text layouts so that individual texts can be linked together."
