In a course led by Prof. Sabine Cole, students at HAWK Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen have investigated how shifted the perceptions of a kiosk can be. An AI imagines a kiosk quite differently than it actually looks in reality, even with a detailed description. The results of this analysis plus the real kiosk Snac:ki with AI-generated products can be viewed at this year's "Werkschau" from August 4 to 6, 2023.

In the "Experimental Design" course, a total of 22 students from the Hildesheim Faculty of Design at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen looked at the diversity of kiosks. Each student was asked to choose a kiosk from the surrounding area, analyze it using a profile and get to know its owner. The research was extensive and included all the more or less obvious data such as opening hours, size, range of offers, personal statements and biographical information.
After this research phase, various AIs were asked to generate images from the material they had compiled that were supposed to correspond to these descriptions. However, the students had to realize that the results had little to do with reality and that the respective results with the same query were completely different. The exercise then consisted of finding out how a prompt had to be formulated in order to get a result that was as close to reality as possible, and the way there was full of surprises.
This path can be followed under the project title "KI:OSK. Artificial Intelligence vs. Reality" at this year's exhibition in House B. In addition to the exhibition of results, you can even visit the self-built kiosk Snac:ki, which also offers AI-generated products.
The HAWK exhibition will open with a vernissage on Friday, August 4, at 8:30 pm in House E. Over 100 final theses from the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses, as well as the results of semester projects such as those from "Experimental Design", can be viewed here until August 6.
